“The Painting That Isn’t” By Shelly McCoy Opening On October 24th.
Savta And Her Twin | 2026 | Fabric On Cotton
Bernice Steinbaum Gallery is pleased to present Shelly McCoy's second exhibition with the gallery, featuring a new body of textile works that continues her inventive use of cloth and thread—materials and tools that evoke the domestic rituals traditionally associated with the American housewife of the 1950s. With wit, warmth, and an unmistakable sense of humor,McCoy transforms these familiar symbols into richly personal works that explore memory, identity, and human connection.
Working primarily with textiles, McCoy creates portraits that are both intimate and playful. She approaches fabric not simply as a material, but as a storytelling medium, stitching together narratives that reveal the individuality of each subject. Although the iron is an important tool in her process, its presence is delightfully ironic; McCoy is less interested in preserving convention than in dismantling it, reshaping fabric into works that celebrate imperfection, personality, and lived experience.
McCoy's previous work has honored women whose courage has shaped public life, including Kamala Harris and Liz Cheney, paying tribute to their determination and the sacrifices they have made. In this exhibition, her focus turns to commissioned portraits that capture cherished memories and the distinctive details that define each sitter. Every work includes personal references chosen with care—often a beloved dog, whose presence adds humor, affection, and another layer of narrative to the composition.
Animals occupy a special place in McCoy's world. Her own beloved rescue dog, once a stray found near a gas station, reflects the artist's deep empathy and appreciation for unexpected connections. That same spirit of generosity and observation infuses her portraits.
The exhibition also introduces an immersive fabric garden, extending McCoy's exploration of textiles into a vibrant, three-dimensional environment. As throughout her practice, she transforms the ordinary into something surprising, inviting viewers to look twice and discover the extraordinary woven into everyday life.
Shelly McCoy's latest exhibition celebrates memory, humor, and the quiet beauty found in personal stories. Each work rewards close looking—and is certain to leave a lasting impression.
